Radar (Radio Detection and Ranging) is a detection system that uses radio waves to determine the distance, relative angle, and radial velocity of an object to the location of the radar device. It is often installed on the ground, ships, and even aircraft to detect aircraft, ships, satellites, missiles, mobile vehicles, weather, and terrain.
Most radar systems are used for defense purposes. Therefore, the design and certification of military standards, or the use of high-endurance components are the basic requirements of radar systems. Whether it is placed on a mobile vehicle, a warship, or a fighter jet, there will be different specifications due to the distance and size of the detecting objects.
A radar system consists of a transmitting antenna that generates electromagnetic waves in radio or microwave equipment, a transmitter, a receiving antenna, a receiver, a back-end processing server, and a human-machine interface console system to determine the properties of objects. Radio waves from the transmitter bounce off the object and return to the receiver, providing information about the object’s position and velocity, which is provided to the backend to analyze the object’s details.

Generally, there will be size, weight and power (SWaP) design target. It must keep the current computing power, or even surpass the ability of previous one. Therefore, under the requirements and constraints, the military grade of high-performance, high-reliability, and high-density system through VITA VPX and OpenVPX will be the best selection for the radar system.
